It is unfortunate that many users of windows 10 are not aware that Windows 10 updates itself in the background. An innocent individual purchases bundles and no sooner has an individual connected their Windows 10 machine to the internet than the data bundles are depleted. Most of these individuals direct their wrath directly to their internet service providers. They have a notion that the ISP is responsible for the vanishing of their bundles. Bundles that would probably have lasted them a whole month were exhausted within 10 or 15 minutes. How now? The ISP has to account for this. Wrong. There is a high probability it is your PC or laptop was trying to update its self in the background.
The first step is to go to Windows Update and check if there are any pending updates.
- Use the Windows + I shortcut to open the Settings app.
- Click on Update & Security,then Windows Update
- If there are any pending downloads they will appear here
- Otherwise click on Check for Updates
If your Windows 10 PC was not able to update for quite a long time due to lack of an internet connection, these updates will now tend to be enormous. The first time it gets access to the internet that will be the end of your limited bundles. Updating will be the first priority. Unless you are on an unlimited Wi-Fi connection, you won’t have the luxury of enjoying your data bundles until Windows 10 is up to date.
Worry not as there is a way you can put on hold pending updates to give your bundles a longer lifespan. Even though you will be able to suspend a majority of the updates from auto-downloading, critical updates will still download according to Microsoft.
What you need to do is declare your internet connection as limited. The following are the steps to do just that:
- Use the Windows + I shortcut combination to open the Settings app.
- Alternatively navigate theStart menu and click onSettings.
- Navigate and click on theNetwork & Internet
- While connected to your preferred routers hotspot, click on the Wi-Fi on the right of the window then Advanced options.
- Under the Metered connection section there is a button labelled
Set as metered connection
Slide the button to turn the setting on.
That is it. Your Wi-Fi connection is going to be treated as a metered connection hence limiting the size of downloads taking place in the background. This should solve the problem of internet bundles disappearing into thin air when connected with you Windows 10 device.
It is important to carry out the steps above before loading your data bundles to the router. As stated above your PC has to be connected to the Wi-Fi hotspot provided by the router to be able to turn the setting on. First connect to the hotspot with no bundles loaded. Then turn on the setting. After that load you data bundles. This will avoid your bundles from been consumed while you are busy working on the setting.
